American Alligator

Spanish explorers called the gator "el lagarto", the lizard which later became alligator. Alligators are ancient reptiles and have survived about 150 million years. They evolved from thecodonts which lived during the Mesozoic era 225 million years ago. Alligators are the closest living reptile relative of the dinosaur.
