National Natural Landmark
Carl W Buchheister and M Stanley Josephs, who was the superintendent of Everglades National Park, declared Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary as a National Natural Landmark on March 23, 1965.

Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary was designated a National Natural Landmark because it contains a wide variety of habitats, including pond cypress, wet prairie, pineland, and the largest remaining stand of virgin bald cypress in North America. The sanctuary traditionally supports the largest wood stork rookery in the United States and is important for several other endangered species.
