People with an interest in our local butterflies are invited to join us on October 19, 2024 from 9 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for Corkscrew's Fall NABA butterfly survey. You do not have to be an expert at butterfly identification to participate: in fact, it is a great way to learn about the butterflies of the area. Amateurs and experienced team members join forces in this citizen science effort to identify and record all the butterflies they can within our count circle. We will meet in the classroom of the Blair Center.
Participants must Pre-Register here.
There is a $3 participation fee for all participants in NABA (North American Butterfly Association) counts.
Corkscrew's annual butterfly count is part of the NABA butterfly surveys that are conducted across the United States, Canada and Mexico. Each NABA count circle is a 15 mile diameter circle, ours includes Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary and part of Corkscrew Regional Ecosystem Watershed (CREW) and the surrounding area. Every year approximately 450 North American butterfly counts, including about 60 Florida counts, are submitted to NABA whose annually published reports provide a tremendous amount of information about the geographical distribution and relative population sizes of the species counted.
A Butterfly Orientation Workshop and Walk before the count will help new participants learn more about local butterflies and how to identify commonly seen species. This seminar is scheduled for September 25, 2024 from 9:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m., and will meet in the classroom of the Blair Center. Participants must Pre-register for the Workshop and Walk as space is limited in each one.
