Corkscrew's wet prairies are now fields of fall sunflowers in bloom along both sides of the boardwalk on the entrance trail. Butterflies visit the small disk flowers for nectar.

The southeastern sunflower (Helianthus agrestis) is a member of the Aster Family (Asteraceae).  This species typically grows in standing water or saturated soil in marshes and wet flatwoods. In the Everglades region, these sunflowers are found in Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary and the CREW Marsh. The bloom season is from May to December.

The stems of this perennial species are usually hairy and reach 2 to 5 feet tall. The leaves are linear and measure 3 to 6 inches with strongly revolute (rolled under) margins. The disk flowers can be yellow to purplish brown. The flower heads measure about 2 inches across.
