Rainfall was below average in April. Warm, dry conditions caused the swamp water levels to drop very quickly. The swamp is officially dry at the B-gauge.
Only deep gator holes may remain with water.
What is aquatic fauna doing now? Fish are trapped in isolated pools and depressions (e.g. alligator holes) where water quality conditions are poor (low dissolved oxygen, high ammonia) and competition is high. The fish who survive these conditions will disperse immediately when rains return and will begin reproducing.
What are wading birds doing now? Wading bird activity is limited to remaining pools of water, where all wetland predators are gathered (otters, raccoons, alligators, etc.) and competing for food and space.
