Land managers conduct prescribed fires at Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary for a number of reasons.
Many people ask about management techniques, and the most economical and best for ecosystem health, in my mind, is prescribed fire. We conduct these on Corkscrew for a variety of reasons. And recently we did one in the southern pine flatwoods. Our target habitats were wet prairie and pine flatwoods. The burn went well except the wet prairie did not burn as hoped. As a result we will revisit that unit later in the season when the waters finally recede.
